QI GONG - AWAKENING AND MASTERING THE PROFOUND MEDICINE THAT LIES WITHIN
JAHNKE R
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ACUPUNCTURE

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 0 Times Cited: 0

Wallace first reported the changes in EEG during transcendental meditation [6]. Banquet [1] observed, on the basis of spectral analysis of the EEG, that the meditation state was a unique state of consciousness, and separate from wakefulness, drowsiness or sleep. The Qi Gong of China is not the same as either transcendental meditation or the Yoga Gong. The EEG during Qi Gong state is clearly different from those recorded during the resting state. The changes in the EEG during the Qi Gong have not been reported previously. The EEG alpha activity during the Qi Gong state occurs predominantly in the anterior regions. The peak frequency of EEG alpha rhythm is slower than the resting state. The change of EEG during Qi Gong between anterior and posterior half is negative correlation. These changes are statistically significant.

Effects of qigong on late-stage complex regional pain syndrome
Wu WH, Bandilla E, Ciccone DS, Yang J, Cheng SCS, Carner N, Wu Y, Shen RG
ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES IN HEALTH AND MEDICINE
5 (1): 45-54 JAN 1999

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 45 Times Cited: 13

Abstract:
Context Despite the growing popularity of qigong in the West, few well-controlled studies using a sham master to assess the clinical efficacy of qigong have been conducted

Objective To study the effect of qigong on treatment-resistant patients with late-stage complex regional pain syndrome type I.

Design Block-random placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Setting Pain Management Center at New Jersey Medical School.

Patients 26 adult patients (aged 18 to 65 years) with complex regional pain syndrome type I.

Interventions The experimental group received gi emission and qigong instruction (including home exercise) by a qigong master. The control group received a similar set of instructions by a sham master The experimental protocol included 6 forty-minute qigong sessions over 3 weeks, with reevaluation at 6 and 10 weeks. Assessment included comprehensive medical history physical exam, psychological evaluation, necessary diagnostic testing, Symptom Check List 90 and the Carleton University Responsiveness to Suggestion Scale.

Main Outcome Measures Thermography, swelling, discoloration, muscle wasting range of motion, pain intensity rating, medication usage, behavior assessment (activity level and domestic disability),frequency of pain awakening mood assessment and anxiety assessment

Results 22 subjects completed the protocol. Among the genuine qigong group, 82% reported less pain by the end of the first training session compared to 45% of control patients. By the last training session, 91% of qigong patients reported analgesia compared to 36% of control patients. Anxiety was reduced in both groups over time, but the reduction was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group.

Conclusions Using a credible placebo to control for nonspecific treatment effects, qigong training was formed to result in transient pain reduction and long-term anxiety reduction. The positive findings were not related to preexperimental differences between groups in hypnotiz-ability Future studies of qigong should control for possible confounding influences and perhaps use clinical disorders more responsive to psychological intervention.

BIOPHOTON MEASUREMENT OF QI,GONG ENERGETICS
VANBENSCHOTEN MM
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ACUPUNCTURE
22 (1): 61-70 1994

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 0 Times Cited: 0

Abstract:
In this study, biophoton measurement techniques are used to examine the unique energetics of Qi Gong therapy. Clinical experimentation and research on patient responses, anti-pathogenic effects of Qi Gong energy, and re-emission of photons from Qi Gong-charged materials produce unusual data that demands consideration of both non-local effects & environmental energetic input to the Qi Gong process.

Abstract:
Most frequently encountered causes of intractable pain and intractable medical problems, including headache, post-herpetic neuralgia, tinnitus with hearing difficulty, brachial essential hypertension, cephalic hypertension and hypotension, arrhythmia, stroke, osteo-arthritis, Minamata disease, Alzheimer's disease and neuromuscular problems, such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and cancer are often found to be due to co-existence of 1) viral or bacterial infection, 2) localized microcirculatory disturbances, 3) localized deposits of heavy metals, such as lead or mercury, in affected areas of the body, 4) with or without additional harmful environmental electro-magnetic or electric fields from household electrical devices in close vicinity, which create microcirculatory disturbances and reduced acetylcholine. The main mason why medications known to be effective prove ineffective with intractable medical problems, die authors found, is that even effective medications often cannot reach these affected areas in sufficient therapeutic doses, even though the medications can reach the normal parts of the body and result in side effects when doses are excessive. These conditions are often difficult to treat or may be considered incurable in both Western and Oriental medicine. As solutions to these problems, the authors found some of the following methods can improve circulation and selectively enhance drug uptake: 1) Acupuncture, 2) Low pulse repetition rate electrical stimulation (1-2 pulses/second), 3) (+) Qi Gong energy, 4) Soft lasers using Ga-As diode laser or He-Ne gas laser, 5) Certain electro-magnetic fields or rapidly changing or moving electric or magnetic fields, 6) Heat or moxibustion, 7) Individually selected Calcium Channel Blockers, 8) Individually selected Oriental herb medicines known to reduce or eliminate circulatory disturbances. Each method has advantages and limitations and therefore the individually optimal method has to be selected. Applications of (+) Qi Gong energy stored paper or cloth every 4 hours, along with effective medications, were often found to be effective, as Qigongnized materials can often be used repeatedly, as long as they are not exposed to rapidly changing electric, magnetic or electro-magnetic fields. Application of (+) Qi Gong energy-stored paper or cloth, soft laser ot changing electric field for 30-60 seconds on the area above the medulla oblongata, vertebral arteries or endocrine representation area at the tail of pancreas reduced or eliminated microcirculatory disturbances and enhanced drug uptake. In order to apply only (+) Qi Gong energy and prevent any potential adverse effects of applying (-) Qi Gong, which often induces vaso-constriction, a simple test to evaluate which parts of the right and left hands, right and left feet, and face emit + or (-) Qi Gong, is shown for the first time. In right-handed individuals, each fingertip of the right hand emits (+) Qi Gong energy. From the right palm, several round spots emit (-) Qi Gong energy, including 2 distinctive coin-shaped areas (one of them being Pc. 8). In the left hand, each fingertip emits (-) Qi Gong energy. In the palm of the left hand, several round spots corresponding to the right hand emit (+) Qi Gong energy. The soles of the feet emit the same patterns as the corresponding hands.

On the face the right eye and the areas between the eyebrows (known as "Yin Tang") emit (-) Qi Gong energy. The left eye and the nose and lips emit (+) Qi Gong energy. Using the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test, determination and localization of pathogenesis and applications of some methods of effective treatment including inducing or enhancing drug uptake of effective medication into diseased areas which are considered to be difficult or impossible to treat will be presented, with examples of successful treatments.

Emission of extremely strong magnetic fields from the head and whole body during oriental breathing exercises
Hisamitsu T, Seto A, Nakazato S, Yamamoto T, Aung SKH
ACUPUNCTURE & ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS RESEARCH
21 (3-4): 219-227 JUL-DEC 1996

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 21 Times Cited: 6

Abstract:
This article reports the result of an experiment that was designed to measure the biomagnetic field emanating from two individuals who were practising traditional Oriental Qi Gong breathing exercises. The biomagnetic field was measured with differential coils wound 80,000 turns, a magnetic needle compass and a digital electromagnetic wave detection device. It was found that an extremely strong magnetic field was emitted from the two individuals. One subject emitted a magnetic field at the level of 200-300 mT (2-3 mGauss) and the other at 0.13 mT (1.3 mGauss). In both cases, moreover, the magnetic needle compass rotated 30 degrees (this was tested 32 times). When the rotation of the needle occurred, a reproducible magnetic field of 800-1500 mT (8-15 mGauss) was indicated on the digital measuring device (this was tested 12 times). It is concluded that traditional Oriental Qi Gong breathing appears to stimulate an unusually large biomagnetic field emission.

Impressions on observing psychic surgery and healing in Brazil which appear to incorporate (+) Qi Gong energy & the use of acupuncture points
Omura Y
ACUPUNCTURE & ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS RESEARCH
22 (1): 17-33 1997

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 23 Times Cited: 3

Abstract:
In December, 1995, the author had the opportunity to observe an elderly psychic healer of East European origin in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This man specialized in cancer treatment by pointing with the fingers of his right hand at his patients, without actually touching them, spending an average of 30 to 40 minutes with each one. The author considered this to be Qi Gong treatment. In March, 1997 the author also observed 2 leading psychic healers in Brazil. One of them, named Rubens Farias, Jr. is a 43 year-old former engineer and computer programmer of European descent, who is commonly known as ''Dr. Fritz III'' because it is believed that the spirit of Dr. Adolf Fritz, a German physician who died during World War I, operates through him. The other is ''Dr.'' Hirota, a 53 year old former farmer of Japanese descent who lives near Campinas, about 120 kilometers outside of Sao Paulo and treats large numbers of people daily using indirect and/or hands-on healing techniques. On March 6, 1997, when the author visited ''Dr. Fritz III'''s clinic in Sao Paolo with a group of Brazilian physicians, he was informed that about 1400 patients had come that day. ''Dr. Fritz III'' examined and treated the majority of the patients in less than one minute each, often asking very quick questions and then immediately beginning treatment. Most patients received injections of a dark brown solution, which, some of the visiting doctors speculated, may be an iodine solution mixed with either alcohol or a local anesthetic. In many patients, he injected this solution near the pathological area or at an acupuncture point near the pathological area. When the needle of the syringe was in the acupuncture point, he twirled it with his fingers several times and then withdrew it. Minor surgery was performed in about 1/5 th of the patients with whom the author observed. Most of the surgical incisions were made on the midline of the tissue over the spine near the pathological area. The clamping of the blood vessels and the closings of the surgical wounds were performed by licensed surgeons or licensed nurses. Major and minor surgery were done by ''Dr. Fritz III'' who used a rather primitive and unorthodox cutting technique. Except for major surgery, assistance was performed by volunteer nurses, including his wife. After the surgical wounds were closed, gauze band-aids were applied. When the surface of the gauze facing the wound was examined, it showed strong (+) Qi Gong energy according to the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test. Essentially, ''Dr. Fritz III'''s treatment consists of acupuncture, injection of iodine with other substances near the pathological area, and (+) Qi Gong energy stored gauze which is applied on the acupuncture point, pathological area, or the site of surgery. ''Dr. Hirota is another famous psychic healer whom the author was able to meet and observe in practice while in Brazil. ''Dr.'' Hirota has been practicing for over 20 years. He usually sees patients who come to his clinic in the mornings and he claims to treat 1000 to 2000 patients daily between 9 AM and 12 noon. His main treatment also appears to be the application of external Qi Gong energy through the fingers of his right-hand, in combination with Shiatsu Massage and a manual procedure resembling chiropractic manipulation.

Evidence of Qi-gong energy and its biological effect on the enhancement of the phagocytic activity of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes
Fukushima M, Kataoka T, Hamada C, Matsumoto M
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CHINESE MEDICINE
29 (1): 1-16 2001

Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 40 Times Cited: 5

Abstract:
In order to test for an effect of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) treated externally with Qi energy (''Qi-treated'' PBS) on the phagocytic activity of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), rigorously controlled experiments employing masking and randomized procedures were carried out under independent monitoring. In all experiments, Qi treatment was externally applied under monitoring to newly purchased unopened 100 ml bottles of PBS, and the PMN phagocytic activity was assayed by one experimenter in masked, randomized and monitored conditions using a highly sensitive chemiluminescence method, Phagocytic activity data were obtained in triplicate for each sample and then statistically analyzed. The PBS samples Qi-treated by the Qi-gong master and by one of the Qi-gong trainees showed clear stimulation of PMN phagocytic activity which was significant statistically, and this phenomenon was highly reproducible. Out of 10 experiments by the Qi-gong master, only twice did Qi-treatment fail to influence the PBS, The activity of Qi-treated PBS decayed over days or weeks. Furthermore, it was found that Qi-treated PBS had decreased phagocytic stimulatory activity after microwave treatment, but not after autoclave treatment. We also demonstrated that microwave irradiation and infrared laser pulse irradiation have similar effects on PBS as Qi-treatment. The results obtained in this experiment provide evidence of the existence of Qi energy, its ability to influence an electrolyte solution and its biological effect. Furthermore, microwave or infrared laser pulse treatment was found to partly mimic the Qi-treatment of PBS.
