Have you read this report (thanks, Marcus!) by the US Pentagon regarding abrupt climate change in the future -- an Ice Age caused by global warming? See http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/000374.html .
There's a recent interview from May 26, 2004 with the people who did the study. You can find it at http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/000760.html .
I found the comments by Jamais Cascio (probably an admin at http://www.worldchanging.com ) particularly valuable -- they are currently towards the end of the page.

Do you REALLY practice meditation? If your REALLY do, do you practice a GOOD method? Are you sure this is REALLY so?
Here is a group that intends to build models of future climate changes using our idle CPU time. Sort of like Seti@Home

"We must convince each generation that they are transient passengers on this planet earth. It does not belong to them. They are not free to doom generations yet unborn. They are not at liberty to erase humanity's past nor dim its future." -- Bernard Lown and Evjueni Chazov, quote in P Crean and P Kome, eds., Peace, A Dream Unfolding
Very nice statement, Bastian.
Nevertheless I believe this statement is far beyond comprehension capacity of most of the poeple that should better listen.

Would mean nothing to me if I hadn't have any interest in the topic and hence have explored some 'answers' for myself. We must convince each generation that they are transient passengers on this planet earth.
If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got.
Also, the free market and individualism in the capitalist sense does not encourage people to think about what happens to Nature as a result of individual actions. Government regulation in ecology helps, but what even developed capitalist countries fail to realize is that it is totally unsustainable for a specialized regulatory body to exercise significant control over the market, because it is impossible to put a regulator or a policeman next to each and every person -- ultimately everyone must learn to become responsible for all and any consequences of their individual actions, including consequences to Nature, and that goes against the very foundations of capitalism.
