Linking to avatar images on other sites has been disallowed

Post: # 8218Post VeskoP »

Using (linking to) avatar images from other sites is not allowed any more because the sites regularly used do not support access via the "https" communication protocol (that's the prefix in the browser address bar, "http", with "s" appended). That causes a problem when one views a page on goldenplanetforum.com via "https" (see the topic "SECURE CHAT AND OPTIONAL SECURE FORUM BROWSING") and this page links to such an avatar image, as then this avatar image is a page component that cannot be loaded via "https". This causes a warning or other signs of problem in browsers to be displayed or noted somewhere in the browser interface, and is a privacy and security risk, especially considering that avatar images are used on most of the forum.

Note that you may have turned off the displaying of any such warnings and signs in your browser, or your browser may not have the capability to inform you of the issue, in which case it is best to change your browser. It is best for your privacy and security to turn on all browser warnings or other signs that are meant to prevent you from sending or receiving unprotected, unencrypted information. Note you should turn on the warnings for ***BOTH*** sending and receiving, not just one of them. For more information, see your browser documentation and search the Internet. (NOTE: this same paragraph is repeated in verbatim on the aforementioned topic.)

If you have linked to a remote avatar image, your avatar will no longer be displayed at all or there will seem to be a problem displaying it. Uploading your avatar to the forum will correct the issue. If you cannot find the location of your remote avatar, please ask for help.

Note also that ICQ status information on topics that have posters who have their ICQ numbers set in their profile can cause this the warnings / signs, too. The rest of the forum administrators have been alerted about the issue, so it should be fixed soon.

Finally, note that there are a number of topics (very much fewer than the topics having avatar images) that link to remote images and the remote server those images reside on does not support "https". In this case, moving the image to another server supporting "https" or uploading the image to the forum is needed for security. If uploading to the forum, applicable copyright laws ought to be honoured.
