Meditation
If you havent but did read the book then I want to know your excuse?
I do sometimes, mostly visualization and light background music type meditation, sitting in a comfortable chair, helps me a lot to get centered. I find full lotus too distracting, and s/t half lotus works but I dont do this position as much either. Its hard around here where I live, for things to get quiet, so I need a group class setting to supplement my solitude type, as I dont get a lot of chances, save in early AM but by then Im tired and hence dont do it every day.
meditation and concentration
Wouldn't that be considered a Zen or Chan attitude to meditation? In my opinion meditation is not necessarily a state of "no thought". I fully support the Zen method, it takes a good deal of discipline but I do not see it as the "final word" on meditation.Teda wrote:If you think you're meditating, you're not.
There are of course different ideas of what meditation is. I quite like Vipassana meditation myself (aka: Insight Meditation). It works very well for me. There is a free book on it here that I really love:

An interesting chapter on meditation and concentration:

great articles, zark! I do a zen class once a week, mainly b/c its the only local meditation class thats free. which for the moment, works for me.
found this interview, i go to this site from time to time:

touches on meditation but moreso regarding this mans personal experience and transformation. I found it pretty interesting. His website I'm not sure about yet.
Lately I'm also having more vivid dreams last night was slightly lucid. That hadn't happened in a while.

Re: meditation and concentration
Hey Zark, I agree with you. I wouldn’t see it as a final word either. A book called TM meditation better defines what I believe meditation is. When you think you’re meditating, that is like saying to yourself, “I’m meditating.” The very moment you say that, you not. It is just a simple way to clarify the difference between meditating and not meditating. When I first heard it, it made a lot of sense.Zark wrote:Wouldn't that be considered a Zen or Chan attitude to meditation? In my opinion meditation is not necessarily a state of "no thought". Vipassana? Very timely, I’m about to attend one of their 10-day course. Have you been to their courses? http://www.dhamma.org/

Great website, thank you for letting me know. Good to see there are some meditation courses that are run on donations . Some other meditation centres seem overly money minded. Yeah, I know they have to pay their bills too, and the rent is pretty high in the city. Still.. it is a real turn off for me..Teda wrote:Vipassana?
