Monitoring Natural Disasters and Pollution Levels

Post: # 3242Post Robanan »

I started this topic so as to involve as many people as possible toward a collective effort to gather and present evidence that would show:

1. Natural disasters have happened extremely frequently during the last century. Specially during the last few years.

2. Pollution levels are high, where, why, who is responsible, and the type of pollution.

3. The media are not acting with responsibility toward preserving the environment. (Different media giving different stistics regarding the same thing, incoherency in the information given, shadowy/incomplete information, coverups, misleading information, etc.)

4. News/Statistics etc.

Please if you have a little time that you can use to contribute to this topic, help us understand what is really going on out there. We all, surely don't want to underestimate the magnitude and effects of things that are happening in our world and around us.

Here's a website on earthquakes http://www.iris.edu/seismon/?view=eveday

You can read the latest headlines relating to earthquakes and the history of them on the websites world map. The recent ones have been in Iran. Indonesia, and Antarctica

Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about the avian flu virus that some experts believe could cause a flu epidemic around the world and this virus is originating in Asia, Vietnam specifically I think

Thank you InfoSource The Link you provided surely leads to shocking information. It makes it easy to notice What Tom says:
Warming of the planetary interior will accelerate tectonic motions (slip) of plates, continents and subduction zones due to increased temperatures in their respective plastic slip zones. An example of a recently reported event of an accelerated subduction zone slip in British Columbia, Canada, has been called a ”silent earthquake” [13].
Many more of these should be expected.

I heard a lot about it too.

As proposed by Aisin, a topic called "Recent Epidemics" has been created in this sub-forum. Please post all epidemics-related information there.

I support the idea Vesko, I have the feeling that both these topics are going to grow over time very much.

Check Global temperature anomalies on January,2005
10 MYTHS about Global Warming
Don't believe these commonly heard statements:

* It isn't really happening (documented science overwhelmingly shows temperatures rising rapidly)

* It's natural (temperature increases, especially since the 1970's, are far above natural variations)

* Any effects well be very gradual (not only are severe storms getting stronger, but climate history shows sharp climate changes can occur abruptly, in only a few years)

* It does not affect the U.S. (the U.S. is experiencing rising sea levels, more severe storms and droughts, die-off of forests, altered animal migrations, and loss of glaciers such as those in Glacier National Park)

* It will be good for us (some areas may become more pleasantly warm, but the cost of negative effects will far outweigh any benefits; disease and heat deaths are increasing)

* Agriculture will benefit (CO2 may make some crops grow faster, but also will accelerate weeds, pests and droughts; crops may not grow well where they once did as climate zones shift.)

* It's being handled by our government (The current U.S. Administration advocates studying, not dealing with, global warming; its energy policy completely based on burning more coal & oil. Most state and local governments are unprepared for major changes)

* It's not a big deal compared to national security (Global warming is actually the most serious threat to the widest range of human concerns. Our national and world security is directly threatened by negative climate effects on weather, water supply, disease, agriculture, marine resources, and health)

* Technology will solve the problem for us (Massive "fixes" like burying greenhouse gases are very unlikely, but many smaller changes can make a difference AND are available now)

* There's nothing to be done anyway (Everyone can make a difference today -- SEE BELOW...)

15 Very Important Things to Do about Global Warming...from the individual to the national

1. Learn about it -- start with this website and see the References
2. Sell the SUV and choose cleaner, more efficient vehicles
3. Use efficient appliances, replace light bulbs, insulate
4. Buy renewable energy, like wind and solar
5. Organize the neighborhood and town for energy efficiency
6. Use your vote and influence as a citizen to elect responsive leaders
7. Encourage efficient transportation in & between communities
8. Plant trees, expand open spaces
9. Reduce sprawl and the paving of the landscape
10. Build for efficiency and solar power
11. Support sustainable farming and forestry
12. Reduce global deforestation
13. Develop an efficient energy policy, moving away from fossil fuels
14. Export new energy technology that uses renewable energy sources
15. ....and Start doing these things today

How long will it take before we really start to change our policy towards polution? How long will it take before we can say: "Hmm, we are on the safe side again"??

From my understanding of humanity, it will never happen.

Very sad ofcourse.

The Bad news link Robanan posted is very interesting (if, of course, someone exists to be interested in it ;) ):
'There is no doubting the existence of this cycle of mass extinctions every 62m years. It is very, very clear from analysis of fossil records,' said Professor James Kirchner, of the University of California, Berkeley. 'Unfortunately, we are all completely baffled about the cause.'
...
'We have tried everything we can think of to find an explanation for these weird cycles of biodiversity and extinction,' Muller said. 'So far we have failed. And, yes, we are due one soon, but I would not panic yet.'

Himalaya's melting glaciers threaten water crisis: WWF
An environmental group says glaciers in the Himalaya Mountains are melting too quickly and has warned this could lead to a major water crisis in South Asia.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) says global warming is causing the glaciers to melt rapidly and the melting will initially lead to flooding in China, India and Nepal.

The fund says that in a few decades, the water level in glacier-dependent rivers will decline, causing major economic and environmental problems for hundreds of millions of people.

The warning comes as the WWF released a new report which it said exposes the rate of retreat of Himalayan glaciers accelerating as global warming increases.

The report indicates glaciers in the region, which represent the greatest concentration of ice on the planet after the Arctic poles, are now receding at an average rate of 10 to 15 metres per year.

"The rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers will first increase the volume of water in rivers, causing widespread flooding," Jennifer Morgan, director of the WWF's Global Climate Change Program, said.

"But in a few decades this situation will change and the water level in rivers will decline, meaning massive economic and environmental problems for people in western China, Nepal and northern India."

Himalayan glaciers feed into seven of Asia's greatest rivers - the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra, Salween, Mekong, Yangtze and Yellow rivers -ensuring a year-round water supply to hundreds of millions of people in the Indian subcontinent and China.

The WWF report was published in the run-up to two meetings in London on climate change organised by Britain as current head of the G8 group of industrialised nations.

In a letter sent to participating ministers, the WWF stressed the need to recognise climate change as an issue that seriously threatens security and development.

"Ministers should realise now that the world faces an economic and development catastrophe if the rate of global warming isn't reduced," Ms Morgan said.
Sounds awful to say the least.

Thanks, Marcus, this is notable news. I hope more and more sites spread such news, and make more and more people realize the terrible situation.

Islanders laugh in face of volcanorisk

The Big Island is the fastest growing of the Hawaiian Islands, adding more than 35,000 residents in the last 15 years. The term "building boom" is uttered by residents who laud it and old-timers who wish it had never started.

The appeal is hard to resist: Where else in America can you buy land with ocean views and year-round sunshine for as little as $15,000 an acre?

But there is the matter of the volcanoes, one reason land is so cheap. The Big Island is really nothing more than the tops of five volcanoes merged into a land mass of about 4,000 square miles. Living on the island for most means living on slopes.

Two of the Big Island's volcanoes--Mauna Loa and Kilauea--are active. Mauna Loa, whose mass makes up half the island, has been swelling for 2 1/2 years and quaking in a way never recorded. An eruption "is not an if, it's a when,"
