Mnemonic Techniques

Post: # 6369Post Yothu »

The "Derren Brown" topic in this very subforum trigged interest in me. In one of Mr. Brown's TV shows, namely "The Heist", the term "linking technique" is mentioned. I looked it up on google and found a simple method, in this case, to remember the order of the planets in Earth's solar system.

There are various methods of memorizing data through imagary, eg linking digits to correlating images (a candle for "1" for example), or use words that rime with the pronounciation of a digit ("wine" for "9" for example).

I have heard of such methods before, but did not pursue in learning such a technique.

Has anybody got profound knowledge of such techniques? (maybe pointing out a link to some articles or any other material that deals with the subject)

I recall an ebook on the subject of memory. I once practiced the method for remembering all the cards in a 52-piece shuffeld deck. After an hour or so I could remember ten cards, forward and backward but then I stopped practicing. I was convinced though that if I did continue the practice I was going to be able to memorize all the 52 cards. But I simply asked myself, why should I want to do that??

Anyhow, the ebook wasn't just for memorizing a deck of cards, it actually covered a variety of techniques for various uses.

The example on the order of planets is quite comical and vivid. :) Creating a story like that is more interesting, but also more time consuming, the time spent is well justified if it's something that you really want to memorize and are having difficulty otherwise.

Alisima, interesting book as well, memorizing the deck of 52 cards is perhaps useful only if you spent a lot of time in a casino.

Another example of mnemonic technique, to memorize the seven layers of the OSI model quickly, change the keywords into other words which can be linked into a 'meaningful' phrase, for example: Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away for Presentation, Data link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application. For more fun or dramatic effect, there's also a James Bond story like the order of planets example.

Also, there's Mind Mapping technique developed by Tony Buzan.

I've also read briefly about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), it's not so much for mnemonic, but more for achieving certain behavioral effects, and hence success in the associated area. I don't know the details and how it is implemented exactly, but I'm having some reservation concerning the use of this technique. I get a feeling that the cases of success of the technique is partially contributed by replacing a set of belief system with another set, which I think is still imprisoning the mind. Most of the time ('most of the time' because I don't embrace the following as a belief system :P) I think freeing the mind from any stereotype and belief system helps to attain better mental health, and perhaps a step closer to enlightenment.

Perhapse, but then one start wondering "what the h-e-l-l am I doing in a casino..."

The basic motivation for NLP is for change. And the best place for change is in the persons unconscious. So NLP basically works in the unconscious. It doesn't make the unconscious conscious, it simply fills it with 'better' idea's like "I am not afraid of mice" instead of "I am afraid of mice". But what is the difference?? Before NLP, where the person was afraid of mice, he had no control over the phobia, he had no control over his additude towards mice. And after NLP, althought he lost his phobia, he still has no control over his additude towards mice. His unconscious is simply programmed into believing that he isn't afraid of mice. In both cases, before and after NLP, the person is in the grip of the unconscious. The emphasize, however, is ofcourse on the fact that the person has lost his phobia. But to me the person hasn't moved an inch, only his conscious experience is perhapse a bit less frightfull.

One nice thing to know is that here in holland you can become a NLP-practitioner in 16 days!! Ofcourse one has to pay 4000 euro's...

It seems that you defined personal change at unconscious level. Since you cannot change the uncoscious level, there will be no change. How interesting yet confusing to lots of people.

For me there is still a change. A bridging between unconscious and conscious awareness.

For you to change something at the conscious level you would not need to visit any expert, NLP or any other psychoanalyst. It is easy. You can do it yourself. But the reason people go to the therapist is for a change in the unconscious. Because they themselves can't do it. Change in the unconscious is hard because of the simple fact that you are unconscious of it.

For hundreds of years therapist have devised ways of changing the unconscious. It, as I recall, all started with hypnosis, as far as the records go. Now in hypnosis the conscious mind is asleep and the unconscious is open. So it is just an easy manner of literally re-programming. Freud abandoned hypnosis and start the famous psychoanalytical method, it was for the most part the same although the subject was kept conscious. In any case, the goal is change in the unconscious.

That is basically what they are up to. And NLP isn't much different.

But, as you so well put it, changing the unconscious is impossible. Although that is not entirely true. For if it were we would be doomed. We would all be slaves at the mercy of the mighty unconscious. No, there is a way. An indirect one. To change the unconscious one simply needs to make it conscious. Then it is all a piece of cake.

If NLP is such a useful tool, why isn't it taught in psychology classes (maybe it is and I am not aware)? Has anybody undergone an NLP-session at a professional? How is NLP going to help me improve my memory (or attitude of learning)?

I still memorize the story of the planets, Aisin. I have used the "rime-technique" on some chinese vocabulary a colleague taught me yesterday and I remember them well so far. I'll have a look into your links as soon as possible too.

Maybe this is not the right place for this here, but a friend of mine send me link to a funny hypnosis video, you maybe like to watch.

If the power of hypnosis really is superior to the power of love, then why are people not collectively hypnotized by the media (TV for example) to fall in love with each other? The long-sought solution to world peace. I'm just kidding...

Don't misunderstand me, I am not in favor for NLP. In fact I am more or less against it.

If I would, and could, answer that question I would already have started NLP.

First thing first, the love got through hypnosis is not real love. It is weak because it is destroyed once consciousness enters again. And not only that, it is imposed from the outside. Second thing, people are collectively hypnotised, including for love and sex. Then why isn't there peace?? Simply because the love and sex people have lacks something (even TP says this). The moment the love and sex are over they realise that again. Not because love and sex are good, no, but because they push away the conscious mind. They are used as a tranquilizer, to put you into a mental sleep. And when you wake up, you see the horror again.

A member recommended me a book by Harry Lorayne, namely How to develop a Super-Power Memory (unfortunately it can't be viewed because it seems not to be online).
I found a Mnemomic library on the net (multilingual, mainly english and russian).
http://users.lk.net/~stepanov/mnemo/mnemoe.html

Currently I am into learning the PEG system of memory (I have just begun) and training visualizing most ridiculous associations between items.

Update 21/7/06:
As I learned the 100 Peg words I found it necessary to test myself. I browsed the web and found an Excel sheet to enter your own Peg words (mine are those suggested by Harry Lorayne) and quiz yourself.

The Excel sheet can be found here: http://www.thememorypage.net/files.htm
