We don't need to be religious to study it ^^ See, I'm not buddhist, but I can still search for it for one of my project.

Anyway, i just wrote in google: "Pope wears a skullcap" (quoted from you) and the answer came up like that.

heres an article I just found, apparently theres a theory that the skullcap custom, christian clergy [papal, jesuit] or jewish, is from greek hermetic [hermes following] tradition. The "hat of hermes":

Kipa = dome?
